New (FREE) West Africa Missions Magazine Available

Go West Africa magazine - Building Up editionThe West Africa region has released another great “mini-mag” through the IMB website and the story I helped cover in Ghana is in it. The magazine also has some “bonus” features found online at the gowestafrica.org website.

You can order a free copy from the IMB’s online store. All you pay is shipping (60-ish cents) and the limit is 50 per order. Why not order a stack to give out at church! Who knows, you may help inspire someone to get involved in God’s work in West Africa.

George Faile Foundation Update

A mother and her child in the pediatrics ward at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, GhanaThe Faile Foundation has sent out their Spring 2009 newsletter to their supporters and you can get it in PDF form online. Those of you that have purchased prints of my West Africa photographs have all directly supported this organization. Most people don’t realize that an incredible 99% of all donations to the Foundation go to the ministry – a mere 1% is used for administrative expenses.

If you read the recent newsletter you’ll see this section about their most recent project:

A container has just been sent to BMC with two incubators, two autoclaves, five oxygen concentrators, wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and over 130 barrels of medical supplies, bandages, and envelopes for pharmacy use.

Special thanks to Vicki Barnes and Tabernacle Baptist’s support of the Ghana Bandage project, Pat Howard for much of the medical supplies, Tarak Garas for the incubators, Steve Rutledge of Luke19-10 ministries for an autoclave, the Oxygen Store and Clear Choice in Rome, GA for donated oxygen concentrators, the numerous volunteers who roll bandages and send envelopes, and all of you who have helped with your financial contributions!

It is encouraging for me to see so many people coming together and donating their time, skills, tools, and finances for such an important cause. Read the newsletter’s brief report on the hospital’s 50+ year track record and you will realize how important the work at BMC is.

BMC Stories hit the Baptist Press

Heidi in front of the hospitalThe three stories Emily Peters wrote about the Baptist Medical Centre have been published on the GoWestAfrica.org website as well as by the Baptist Press. The BP has now distributed it to all its affiliates and the stories are popping up all over the web (and in some newspapers).

I got an email from Mike Mott, our pastor from Seminole First Baptist Church, telling me that she was on the front page of the Florida Baptist Witness!

Here are the stories on gowestafrica.org (I’m biased towards that source since it has more photos):

Or you can pick another source:

A Piece of MCCG in Ghana

I’ve been going through my photos from BMC and found one I forgot to post. This logo was on a bed sheet in the hospital and made me quite happy. Looks like at some point Heidi’s employer, the Medical Center of Central Georgia, donated some stuff to the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, Ghana. Keep up the good work MCCG!

Ozments’ Blog

Pat and Peggy Ozment who I covered on my recent trip have a blog of their own. They have put up a couple posts related to the story I was covering. They posted several of my photos and have added their own captions and insights to share their experiences.

Emily Peters’ Blog

Emily, the IMB journey(wo)man that I accompanied for part of my trip, has a blog of her own and recently posted some stuff about her visit to BMC with me. She writes about some of the people she interviewed for the stories she is working on.

She also gives me mad props for photos – thanks Emily!

Almost Home

My flights went well and I even arrived in DC a bit early. My mom, my brother Philip, and Trey met me at the airport. That little boy has grown in three weeks! My mom has been rubbing off on him and he is now a little chatterbox.

In this photo, Trey is sporting the shirt I had made for him from the BMC 50th anniversary material. I think we’ll have to wait a while before he wears that shirt in public. He’s also wearing Heidi’s surgical scrub cap I brought back.

This weekend Trey and I will leave Richmond and head down to Georgia to be re-united with Heidi.

Tommy’s Preaching Points

Tommy tells the story of the good Samaritan. If you are a regular church-going Baptist you probably think a preaching point is a bullet on the pastor’s powerpoint slide. In the remote regions of Northern Ghana a preaching point is a location in a remote village where people gather together to hear God’s Word. Sometimes it is under a tree, sometimes in a courtyard, other times in a school yard.

Last year, we joined Tommy Harrison for a church service in Porungon, one of his three preaching points. This year I went with him to another village about 2 miles from Porungon. Instead of meeting under a tree, they meet under a tin roof used as a school. Read the rest of this entry »
